We caught up with emerging multi-talented DJ, songwriting and production duo Atlantix as they prepare to smash the Electronic Dance Music scene.
Hi Atlantix, how are you and what’s going on in your world at the moment?
Super busy, but great! So glad summer is almost here, looking forward to releasing a string of singles this year along with attending some great parties and making some great music.
Where are you currently based?
We’re actually split between New York and London right now, so travelling when necessary and doing a lot of work remotely. We met and started working together while we were both living in London, but Dave has been moving around a bit and recently moved back to NYC. We’ve gotten really used to it though, and I think living and vibing off of different cities into our music has been a great thing for us.
How would you describe your sound?
We blend a lot of different influences and sounds, but in general we’re a blend of EDM with an emphasis on pop hooks and pop songwriting. We’re into many different genres of music, but on the electronic side of the spectrum we were both really into progressive house when we started writing together, and have since gotten into a lot of trap and future bass.
Who were your influences growing up?
Well our influences were a bit different since one of us grew up in the USA and one in Belgium and the UK. I think between the two of us we could probably fill this whole page and cover just about every genre.
Dave – Sigur Ros, Timbaland, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Arcade Fire, Dr.Dre, RJD2
Rich – Swedish House Mafia, Nicky Romero, Kanye West, Mark Ronson, Coldplay, Bloc Party, Zedd, Calvin Harris
How did you get involved in the Dance music business?
We were both really into Electronic music ever since we started producing, but I guess things got really serious once we started writing toplines and pitching to a lot of well known DJ’s. Having some placements as songwriters enabled us to get a different insight into the creative process, and then we decided to shift our focus more towards the production side of things.
Where would you like to see yourself in the months ahead?
Collaborating with and remixing for some great people, and hopefully some great gigs along the way too.
Which is your ultimate career dream?
It sounds so cliché, but definitely think this has to be winning a Grammy and having a catalog of top 10 hits. Playing a sold out stadium wouldn’t be so bad either!
Can you tell us about any upcoming releases and what has been your career highlight so far?
The career highlight so far has probably been the releases we had as songwriters on Ultra and Armada. Those songs (‘Last Goodbye’ – Tom Swoon & Swanky Tunes, and ‘I’ll Be Waiting’ – Robert Falcon & Vigel), spent a while on the Beatport charts and were supported by tons of great DJ’s including Tiesto, Martin Garrix, and Nicky Romero.
As for release plans, we’re about to release a string of singles that we’ve been holding onto for a few months now. We’ve been busy planning our releases for 2017 and we’re super excited to see the response they’ll get. The first single ‘Dangerous’ will be coming out next month in June.
We’ve also got some pretty cool collaborations in the works for the rest of the year, so excited to see how those turn out.
Who’s inspiring you in 2017?
Collectively we’re inspired a lot by artists such as Boombox Cartel, Grey, Brooks, Galantis, The Chainsmokers, Axwell Ingrosso and Diplo/Major Lazer. We love EDM and we love Pop so anything commerical or on at the club or in the festival is a big inspiration for us. We’re heavily influenced by both the US and UK/European scenes.
If you could choose, who would you like to collaborate with?
There are so many! I think for sure near the top of the list would be Boombox Cartel, The Chainsmokers, Diplo, Martin Garrix, Calvin Harris and any of the Swedish House Mafia guys. We love so many artists and so many different genres its hard for us to select just a few, but for sure these guys would be up there!
Tell us something not many people know about Atlantix?
We love Jaffa Cakes while we’re producing, and we recently spent a lot of time in the studio out in Vienna, Austria.
Anything to add/shout outs?
Much love to you guys for the interview! Things are gonna move pretty quickly over the summer, so be sure to follow us @weareatlantix for updates.
